Abstract

The aim of this article is to take a historical and political look at the process of environmentalization in the Brazilian agribusiness sector. Since the 1970s, there has been a global and national environmentalization process, which has resulted in the creation of various environmental bodies, laws, agreements, treaties and protocols, and has established a form of environmental governance. This process, and in particular the growing recognition of climate change as a global public problem and a collective emergency, has influenced the actions of players in the international system and national governments, generating pressure on practices that cause environmental degradation, overexploitation of natural resources and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One of the central sectors in this debate, due to its international and national activities and the implications for climate policies, is agribusiness. In this context, this research aims to critically analyze the process of environmentalization of Brazilian agribusiness, focusing on the climate agenda.
