Abstract

This research aims to elucidate the type of truth claim that characterizes the work of art, based on
the mode of being of the image, within the framework of the thought of the German philosopher
Hans-Georg Gadamer. Thus, we will present the ontic-ontological value of the image, which lies in
the fact that what is represented attains its true being in its representation, undergoing an
enhancement. This emphasizes that the mode of being of the artwork resides in its self-
representation, a concept that will lead us to address the temporality proper to the work as a
lingering in what it expresses. In this way, the mode of being of the spectator will be illuminated through the concept of theoria, understood as a full attendance to the meaning that takes place in the work. The spectator will participate in the being of what occurs therein because they recognize the represented world as their moral world—the one in which human existence always already lives. Therefore, in recognition, Gadamer finds the cognitive value of mimesis.
