Exu and the truth(s): essay about brazilian popular theology

The central objective of this study is to correlate the divinity Exu and the question of truth, taking into account the hypothesis according to which, within Exu’s vital spectrum, truth is polysemic and not univocal. To achieve this purpose, we follow the post-theistic hermeneutical guiding thread, since Exu’s regencies make clear his insubmission to Western metaphysics and to colonial metaphysics, whose characteristics are explored throughout this article. On the other hand, Exu’s (spectral) experiences take place within a context of colonial heritage, which is why his truths are revealed not as an adequation between discourse and reality, but as inadequation, scandal, disruption, self-defense, breaking of obstacles (“demands”), resistance, opening of paths, etc. As in Brazil, Exu takes on Brazilian historical-cultural figures, as malandragem shows, and Exus and Pombagiras of Umbandas and Omolokôs as well, his truths make it possible to think about the possible profiles of a Brazilian popular theology, something to be touched upon in this investigation.
