Abstract

BACKGROUND: The coaching profession is supported by knowledge and skills, acquired throughout life, with unique experiences and interpretations of what is being learned.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the learning trajectories of team sports coaches, working in high performance.
METHODS: This scoping review was carried out between July and September 2023, in the Web of Science database. The inclusion criteria were: a) articles in English, Portuguese or Spanish; b) study participants should be coaches; c) working in high-performance environment in team sports.
RESULTS: 631 publications were found, seven of which met the criteria and were analyzed. Results show that having been an athlete has an important influence on learning specific aspects of the sport and the cultural context. Formal learning is seen as limited, given the distance from the practical application of theoretical content. Professional practice provides significant learning situations, such as sharing experiences and reflecting on own practice. Furthermore, training courses are predominated by men, interfering in the learning trajectory of women coaches, who feel less confident and welcomed.
CONCLUSION: We conclude that the ways in which coaches learn is consolidated, but there are gaps to be explored, such as considering the context in which each coach develops, based on the unique characteristics of each one, such as place of birth, gender, ethnicity, access to sport and sport culture, especially in the Brazilian context, seeking to understand the barriers and opportunities capable of modifying each learning trajectory.
