Burnout Syndrome in bachelor's degree students in physical education

BACKGORUND: Burnout Syndrome has increasingly been identified in academic settings, particularly in programs with high practical and academic demands such as Physical Education. In this context, sociodemographic and academic factors may influence its dimensions.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the profiles of Physical Education students in relation to the dimensions that make up Burnout.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 438 students from the bachelor’s degree in physical education. The instruments used were the sociodemographic questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Student Survey.
RESULTS: Students showed moderate levels of Cynicism and Emotional Exhaustion and low Professional Efficacy. Higher scores were observed for Cynicism (Md=4.33), followed by Emotional Exhaustion (Md=3.40), and lower scores for Professional Efficacy (Md=1.75) (p<0.001). A moderate positive correlation was found between Emotional Exhaustion and Professional Efficacy (r=0.50), and a negative correlation between Cynicism and Professional Efficacy (r=0.35). Variables such as year of study, income, age, and study workload were significantly associated with burnout dimensions (p<0.05). Cluster analysis identified three distinct groups, with Group 3 showing a profile closer to burnout, characterized by higher Emotional Exhaustion and Cynicism and lower Professional Efficacy.
CONCLUSION: the dimensions of academic burnout are related to sociodemographic variables, with time dedicated to study, income and involvement in sports being indicators to determine the different groups of students in relation to academic burnout.
