BACKGROUND: Tourist camping represents an important form of leisure, nature tourism, and outdoor adventure activities, integrating recreational, environmental, and economic dimensions. In the Brazilian context, the formalization of these enterprises occurs through the Tourism Service Providers Registry (Cadastur).
OBJECTIVE: Considering the recent transformations in leisure and tourism consumption patterns, intensified during the post-COVID-19 pandemic period, this study aimed to analyze the temporal evolution (2008–2024) and spatial distribution of registered tourist campsites in Brazil, based on official Cadastur data covering the 26 states and the Federal District.
METHODS: This study adopted a quantitative, descriptive, and documentary research approach, based on time-series analysis and comparisons among Brazilian federal units.
RESULTS: The findings revealed three distinct phases in the formalization process of the sector: a period of low institutional visibility until 2016; a transition phase between 2017 and 2019, marked by gradual growth; and a phase of consolidation and expansion from 2020 onward, associated with the reorientation of tourism preferences in the post-pandemic context, characterized by the increasing appreciation of outdoor experiences and natural environments. However, significant regional inequalities were observed in the distribution of registrations.
CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the growth in the number of registered tourist campsites reflects not only the expansion of adventure tourism but also institutional strengthening, the administrative capacity of states, and the influence of public policies. These findings highlight ongoing challenges related to the democratization of access to leisure and the formalization of the sector in historically less-developed regions.
