Abstract

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, Physical Education has significantly expanded its scope, moving beyond a view restricted to physical performance and sports technique to incorporate sociocultural, environmental, and ethical dimensions. This movement is supported by the National Curriculum Guidelines (DCNs), which guide Physical Education training towards a critical, pluralistic, and interdisciplinary approach, understanding the body as a cultural and historical construct.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the perceptions of Physical Education students regarding adventure sports and their contributions to environmental education.
METHODS: This research is characterized as qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive in nature, seeking to understand the perceptions and meanings attributed by students to adventure sports practices within the context of their Physical Education training. It was a field study conducted with students from the Physical Education course. The sample consisted of 106 regularly enrolled students from different periods of their undergraduate studies, selected by convenience.
RESULTS: The results indicate that the majority of students (72.6%) have already practiced some type of adventure sport, while 27.4% reported never having experienced this type of activity. A higher participation rate among male students was observed. Among the most practiced sports were hiking, followed by surfing, rappelling, and activities in waterfalls. Students reported mostly positive experiences, associated with a feeling of freedom, contact with nature, and overcoming personal limits. Physical benefits were also noted, such as improved endurance, balance, and motor coordination. Regarding environmental education, all participants recognized that adventure sports can contribute to environmental preservation.
CONCLUSION: The inclusion of adventure sports in Physical Education curricula contributes to a comprehensive and critical education aligned with contemporary demands for sustainability, citizenship, and quality of life.
