Abstract

BACKGROUND: Adventure sports accidents are being highlighted in digital and television media.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the discourse emerging from this epidemic of news coverage.
METHODS: However, we will specifically emphasize three news stories involving adventure sports: 1) hot air ballooning accident; 2) the Juliana Marins case; 3) Pico Paraná.
RESULTS: The guiding question that directs this research is to analyze to what extent Brazilian news outlets incorporate legal elements in their coverage of accidents involving extreme sports, especially regarding the practitioner's right to risk. Our analyses indicate that news and suffering become strategies to attract an audience. This conversion of tragedy into spectacle is conceptualized as the artistic version of capitalism, whose objective is to reach new markets.
CONCLUSION: It is therefore considered that the Right to Risk is frequently distorted or selectively mentioned, especially when the case has media potential and financial return.
