Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze the level of technical efficiency of Brazil’s federal schools management, in order to identify schools with the best combination of inputs and educational outcomes. We used microdata from Censo Escolar 2011 and Enem 2011, provided by Inep/Mec, and the methodology of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The central results of the research show that the federal schools located in the Espírito Santo state have, on average, the highest levels of technical efficiency (0.822). Moreover, the performance of the localities in terms of efficiency appears to be influenced by the socioeconomic status of the students, because the most efficient units have students with the better economic contexts than schools with greater inefficiency.
