Resumo

This article discusses how sustainable adaptations, which are those that seek to preserve environmental integrity and advance social justice, can promote the necessary transformations for a system to improve and, thus, become more resilient. Based on four stories from smallholder farms in Costa Rica, which were collected through in-depth interviews, it analyzes how their practices constitute examples of the type of sustainable adaptations that can transform the system, as well as its drivers. I conclude that their adaptations guard environmental integrity by using organic agriculture and, at the same time, they promote social justice by carrying them out through inclusive and equitable processes that challenge unequal social structures.
