Abstract

This article aims to characterize the emergence of forest standards as mechanisms for implementing sustainable practices within the emerging academic field of Social Studies of Science and Technology (SSST). This study addresses the social construction of the concept of standard in their complexes relationships with the triad formed by environment, forests and sustainable development. This constructivist research targets to demonstrate through historical, theoretical and exploratory inquiry the relationship between vulnerable and delicate ecosystems such as the forests vis-à-vis the intensification of human control over nature had created conflicts in various sectors of international society, which leveraged sustainable stewardship, through forest certification standards as the primary and most widely accepted mechanism for sustainable practices currently in place.
