Abstract

Railway advent was a major factor for the expansion of industrial capitalism. In Brazil, where the implementation of the railroads was directly associated to the transportation of agricultural production, rail network climbed unique importance during the height of the agricultural export model. When the beginning of the industrialization process, its economic importance was gradually attenuated, reaching a high degree of deterioration in the early 1990s, when almost all the Brazilian rail network was privatized. Since then, the investments have slowly resumed. Thus, this article aims to summarize the main events the railway phenomena has been through in Brazil since its origins to nowadays.
