Abstract

The intensive use of pesticides in agriculture has polluted Brazilian water bodies, leading to serious consequences since these compounds are potential contaminants. In response, this study aimed to map experiences and analyze the social and environmental impacts resulting from pesticide contamination in freshwater bodies across Brazil. To achieve this, a systematic literature review was conducted using theoretical-empirical scientific articles published between 1990 and 2024. The research was guided by the following question: Which pesticides have contaminated Brazil's water bodies, and what are their potential impacts on human health? The results indicated that pesticide pollution is present in the water samples evaluated by the studies, with most showing concentrations above the limits permitted by the Ministry of Health. Some identified pesticides are restricted in certain countries due to their negative effects on environmental quality and human health, causing poisoning, itching, and fetal death. Therefore, it is crucial to implement public policies aimed at better controlling and regulating pesticide use to reduce damage and subsequent contamination of water reservoirs and aquifers.
