Abstract

This paper developed an investigation about the trajectory of Portuguese merchant Antônio José de Araújo (1791-1851) in municipality of Morretes, between 1804 and 1849. In this framework, the purpose of this study is to highlight the forms of social domination exercised by Portuguese who inhabited municipalities of south coast of Province of São Paulo in the first half of nineteenth century. Thus, it is shown that the control of the credit market was crucial for traders formed a dependent entourage. Sometimes these dependents were familiar from their creditors. It was impractical to small traders achieve withdraw from these retinues.
