Abstract

This paper refers to the conflicts and the political tensions of sugar farm workers against the power of the sugar/alcohol parks of Assis, São Paulo state upcountry. From the oral history perspective, through press clippings and work trials, one dialogues with the experiences of these workers and discusses the diversity of their work. The paper approaches the way that they perceive and explain the mechanization progress in the fields of two sugar/alcohol parks, as their memories of these transformations and what is their prospects on the world of work. At this point, it discusses some of the interfaces of mechanization of the sugar/alcohol sector, front the environmental legislation. Notably, there is a paradox amid this legislation: the prohibition of the sugar cane burning, on the farms, ensured the protection of the region biodiversity, also there was a significant reduction of rural workers hiring.
