Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze stories of Machado de Assis, which thematic is concerned about the relation between the artist and its talent - or the lack of it - related to the art. In “Vênus! Divina Vênus!” (1893) and “Aurora sem dia” (1870 - 1873) the history is carried out by pseudo-artists, therefore Ricardo, of “Vênus! Divina Vênus”, as Luis Tinoco, of “Aurora sem dia”, demonstrate to be unaware about this craft and they seem have no talent for the creation. However, “Habilidoso” (1885), is concerned to the art and the artist issued in the machadian tales. In “O Machete”, there is a overlapping of two histories: the love story of Inácio Ramos for the art and for the violoncello and the double betrayal of his wife who abandons him for a machete player. Finally, in “O homem célebre” and “Cantiga de esponsais” the center of the problem pointed out by the narrative seems to be the impasse of the artist between the “popular culture” and the “erudite culture”.
