Abstract

Since the 1990s, the role of the executive secretary has been developing with the incorporation of more complex activities, which demand bigger responsibilities and special skills. The shifts that occurred in organizations, aiming at fitting the requirements of a highly competitive market, led to a demand for employees with a different professional profile. With the bibliographic research presented in this article, it became clear that the executive secretary is able to meet this profile and perform in current organizations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the academic qualifications of professionals working as executive secretaries in a large company in the West of Paraná, Brazil. The result showed that this professional does not occupy the positions that demand the inner skills attributed to this profession. These positions are occupied by professionals of different backgrounds, which reveals that the company, when hiring an executive secretary, does not take into account the academic qualifications as established by the Federal Law that regulates this profession.
