Abstract

The motivational factor of this study was a result of living in the of Balsas’ town, which is the economic foundation of farming and its prominence as a center soybean producer in the south of Maranhão. Noted the potential for its development in the region, this research has come to identify how information technology as an instrument of regional agricultural development in southern Maranhão, can leverage the progress of the Balsas’ region. The research sought to highlight the agricultural development model from the economics model development Rostow, and their impacts on regional development. The evidence presented has given rise to several conclusions, including the geographic location was the main agent provocateur of the economic and technological transformations in the region. The modernization of agriculture in the Balsas region in southern Maranhão aims to bring the farms to the new times, hoping to generate interest in agro-industrial products more competitive. Inequalities are noticeable when examining the rural areas in confrontation with the urban landscape and in information technology, comes as a top aide in the promotion of regional development, because they are strongly highlighted their contributions to the region of the Balsas - MA.
