ECONOMIC DYNAMICS OF THE GREAT MERCOSUR BORDER MESOREGION

The Mesoregion Grande Fronteira do Mercosul (GFM) is located in the Southern region of Brazil and has 396 municipalities, being constituted as a Differentiated Mesoregion through the Program for Integrated and Sustainable Development of Differentiated Mesoregions (PROMESO). The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that influence the per capita GDP of the Great Mercosur Border (GFM) Differentiated Mesoregion, in the period between 2006 and 2016. The spatial data panel model was used as methodology. The results indicate that the GDP per capita of the municipalities of the GFM are positively influenced by physical capital and human capital. The growth of GDP per capita and physical capital can benefit the surrounding municipalities, thus establishing a virtuous cycle of regional economic development. However, when analyzing the growth of GDP per capita in the region, it proved to be significant, but without the significant increase in population.
