Abstract

In the current historical period, everything seems to lean towards globalization. However, some transformations point out new trends such, as the valuation of territory assets. This trend challenges many local governments to improve their natural, social and cultural resources as an encouragement for developing strategies based in creation, preservation, or reconstruction of their own identity in an environmental and sustainable way. In this article, a reference to a territorial cutout of Brazil, is made it is located in states of Santa Catarina (northern) and Parana (southern), which there are two plant species that have become important natural resources for the region, parana pine and mate tea. The reality is contextualized and some strengths and challenges are pointed out for sustainable development of the region in question, the focus is the possibility of affecting the Geographical Indication of mate tea produced from native herbals. Research from the literature on the subject is made as well as documentary and interviews with representative authorities of local institutions, from which an analysis and questions are proposed.
