Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the population dynamics in relation to the evolution of production structure and changes in the economics of Paranaense West mesoregion from 1970 to 2009. To meet the proposed goal, we used population data from the Census and profile analysis of both population and location of employment in the region. In the 1970s, the productive base of the West was founded in the primary sector and shows a reversal in the composition of the population, in other words, a significant reduction of the rural population. In this period also there was a significant interstate migration, especially in search of new agricultural frontiers. In the 1980s and 1990s are increasing migrations inter-state and intra-regional. There was a reduction of both emigration and immigration, and this can be explained by the process of modernization of rural production, urbanization and the strengthening of secondary and tertiary sectors, as can be seen in the analysis of profile location quotient. The period from 2000 to 2009 confirms previous trends of intensification of industrialization and the strengthening of the tertiary sector, mainly in the pole cities of Cascavel, Foz do Iguaçu and Toledo.
