Abstract

The sugarcane agribusiness chain is one that has most contributed to the economic growth of Brazil. In 2010-2011 crop it was planted 8.1 million hectares producing 28 billion gallons of ethanol. The forecast for  2011-2012 harvest is 33 billion liters of ethanol, bringing Brazil as the world´s largest producer of ethanol. This study aims to determine the competitiveness of Brazilian ethanol through the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) considering a sugarcane traditional farming area and another expansion area. The instrument used for this analysis was the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) developed by Monke and Pearson (1989) and the results show that private and social profitabilities were positive, indicating competitiveness and economic efficiency, respectively, for the two chains. The ethanol chain in the traditional area was the most competitive and with greater economic efficiency due to its higher value in both profitabilities. The transfers associated with the production for the chains showed positive values. The greater positive value in the traditional area chain reflects the high prices or private incomes in this chain, indicating that there is positive transfer of the society for the production sector.
