Abstract

This essay analyzes the character Joe Carioca from Walt Disney, the only Comic Book Brazilian leading figure created by foreigners. It seeks to deconstruct the idea that the hero would be American criticism towards Brazilians, for being rascal and reverse to work. The study, accomplished by literature review, rescues the sociocultural history which involved the character’s creation and deals with its formation and graphic and personality evolution throughout four distinct phases. This way it’s possible to conclude that the ones to blame for the doubtful nature of Joe Carioca were not only the Americans, but also the Brazilian designers and screenwriters.
