Abstract

The present article aims at discussing cultural representation, more specifically the Brazilian culture, in EFL – English as a Foreign Language – coursebooks. For the purpose of this study, the matters of culture and representation, as well as the relevance of textbooks in the learning process are discussed in a broad sense. Specific examples of coursebooks, especially the Time Zones series, published by Cengage, are used as case study and examples of the issues discussed here. After all, what is the role of culture when learning a language? How important is it that a student sees its culture represented in the coursebook? How accurate are these representations? And, most importantly, how riddled are they by stereotypes?
