Abstract

This article investigates the Brazilian development of written proficiency in English regarding the production of abstracts in Health Sciences. Based on Corpus Linguistics, Linguistics for Specialized Languages and English for Academic Purposes, the text reports a study which put together, described and analyzed a corpus of 180,170 words, in Medicine, Nutrition and Pharmacy. Lexical bundles, recurrent strings of words used in texts, were the analytical unit. From the metrics of lexical frequency and variability, the Brazilian and the international data segments uncovered distinctions in the ways of building a scientific narrative. The findings reveal the usefulness of an awareness of the different text production contexts, so that pedagogical practice can be attuned to learners’ needs. To conclude with, the creation of a virtual learning environment based on the research elements is reported.
