Abstract

The German immigrants that from the 19th Century on came to Brazil brought with them, besides their dreams of a better life, also its language and culture. In the new Brazilian homeland the various regional varieties, their native languages, in a great part merged each other making the Hunsriickisch. This merges received many elements of the Portuguese language creating the Brazildeutsch. This fact was, and is being one of the basic causes for the conservation of German language in Brazil, as several authors that we will analyze, attest. If the German language had been pure, that means without merging with the Portuguese language, this one, as shows the situation of many linguistic islands around the world, for sure, would not have survived with the intensity that it still is spoken in many regions, especially in the South of Brazil. It’s our goal, through this work, make an analysis of authors who, over these 200 years of the presence of German language and culture in Brazil, have addressed this aspect and confirm our hypothesis.
