Abstract

This article aims at analysing self-translation – the translation of a text by its author – as practiced by João Ubaldo Ribeiro, who translated two of his own novels (Sargento Getúlio e Viva o povo brasileiro) into English. This work focuses on the translation of Sargento Getúlio and João Ubaldo’s choices for the translation of popular sayings as well as his objectives as a translator (described
in an email interview), namely to give the text the feel of a translation and, at the same time, to make it sound universal. The article discusses the relation between the strategies used by João Ubaldo to translate popular sayings to the strategies of domestication and foreignization, discussed by Venuti. Finally, this work discusses the translation procedures used by João Ubaldo in the light of his own words as well as Venuti’s concepts.
