Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of several myths that come together in establishing the mythological substrate of two novels from the Nicaraguan writer Gioconda Belli: La mujer habitada and Waslala. It focuses on the central symbols that contribute to the literary work structuring and the identity molding: the house and its specifications, the  land and the body, different image representations of trees and the jungle, as well as the original waters connected to the image of the god Tlaloc. The approach to the mythological matter leans on the work of Mircea Eliade and also on the studies of Mayan religion and thought by Eric S. J. Thompson and Miguel Leon-Portilla. Among other works, the Dictionnaire des symbols, by Jean Chevalier , was used as support for the interpretation of the main symbolic elements.
