Abstract

In Portugal, neorealism is inaugurated in 1939, rises as opposed to the presentist literature and is concerned with the social realm. It sees society as an area of dissidence  and class struggle. In their writings, its authors side with the poor, the destitute. In the Portuguese scene, neorealists form the opposition to Antônio de Oliveira Salazar’s New State. The movement officially comes to an end in 1974, the same year as that of the Carnation Revolution, which represents an intense yearning of the neorealist literature: the democracy’s return.
