Abstract

In this article, we recuperate the history of the Portuguese language institution as a Brazilian curricular discipline, aiming to discuss how the choices of the subjects to be taught were made and how the election of the language’s conception took place, and to observe the role of textbooks in such a history. The historical character of this text is determined by the recollection of the Portuguese language discipline’s constitution in the Brazilian curriculum, by the outline of the social, political and cultural context in which this takes place, by the relationship of this fact with the evolution of the linguistics studies, and by the configuration of the textbooks published in Brazil
