Based on the assumptions of critical literacies studies, this paper aims to investigate the functioning of discourse markers of alignment and affiliation (Crible, 2024) employed by the host of an interview broadcast by a French radio station, addressing the treatment of covid-19. The dataset comprises the written transcription of a podcast episode published in May 2023 by the French channel Sud Radio (“Covid: Didier Raoult attaqué par des scientifiques pour avoir administré de la chloroquine à plus de 30,000 personnes, il s'explique”). The hypothesis is that the interviewer’s use of discourse markers supports an interview style aligned, on the one hand, with the defense of hydroxychloroquine, and, on the other hand, with the expert position assumed by Didier Raoult, known as “Dr. Chloroquine.” Data analysis reveals a dynamic of complicity between interviewer and interviewee, fostered by the frequent use of alignment and affiliation discourse markers that serve to reaffirm argumentative points made by the interviewee. The findings seek to contribute to literacies studies by examining how ideological stances operate as discursive strategies within the controversial context of scientific knowledge.
