Abstract

Environmental Managerialism: A dimension of corporate environmentalization analyzed through ESG practices

Abstract

This study will examine to what extent the transformations in the functioning of managerial policies and technologies induce changes in the relationship between corporate and state sectors regarding environmental issues, as well as the social, spatial, and economic repercussions. Environmental managerialism discusses the strategies and tactics of capturing and subordinating discussions and practices about nature – and its transformations – to market intentions, through trained exercises and techniques for its control and instrumentalization, or also, its concealment. Environmental managerialism addresses the configuration that a private model of managing the capitalist enterprise takes when incorporating environmental issues. This will interfere with and produce political forms – as well as "public policies" – of administration and command, competent and necessary for its intrusion into such a broad and diverse object. The text will discuss the practices of the ESG guidelines of a large steel company. To achieve the objectives of the paper, we conducted a literature review on authors who studied managerial formats and devices. We covered national and international publications, considering part of the critical literature on this subject. We researched reports and secondary data produced by public and private institutions. We qualitatively understood the application and repercussions of the ESG guidelines implemented by the company Ternium Brasil.

Key words: ESG; Managerialism; Environmentalization; Environmental Managerialism; Financialization; Ternium.
