Abstract

Affirmative actions are actions implemented to reduce the imbalance between social groups, eliminating formal and informal barriers (prejudice, discrimination) that prevent certain groups from accessing higher education. In Brazilian federal higher education, the affirmative policy has materialized, since 2012, in the reservation of places (quotas) for low-income students, graduates from public schools, blacks, mixed race, indigenous people, quilombolas (included in 2023) and people with disabilities. The topic arouses divergent opinions and this work aims to present arguments against and in favor of the quota law in Brazil. Through a bibliographical research, it is pointed out that the main favorable argument is inclusion, promotion of equal opportunities and social diversity. Opponents point out that quotas threaten meritocracy and defend racial equality. Understanding the arguments of each group is essential for strengthening a democratic society that values and respects diversity of opinions. It also contributes to the formulation and improvement of public policies.
