Abstract

Financial education makes individuals better prepared to properly manage their financial resources, which are often scarce. To address this issue, this research was conducted in a high school in the interior of the state of Paraná, with the objectives of evaluating students' basic financial knowledge and understanding family financial behavior, as perceived by participants. This is a quantitative approach, descriptive research and data collection through a questionnaire, answered by 110 students. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to determine data frequencies and apply the Chi-Square technique. The results showed that 74% of the students had basic financial knowledge when they achieved a score equal to or greater than 70% of correct answers, which focuseon four questions related to investment return and risk, notion of inflation, purpose of insurance and mathematical division operation. For 50% of the students, the family was the main source of financial

knowledge. Among the main points of family financial behavior, it was observed that, despite the existence of purchase planning, unplanned purchases occurred. Budgeting and emergency savings were practiced by 55% and 61% of families, respectively. There were few statistically significant differences between socioeconomic profile and financial knowledge.
