Desde a formação do povoado, no início do século XIX, até o ano de 1945, Santa Fé é espaço imaginário onde se desenvolve a trama de O Tempo e o Vento. Mais que um mero cenário em que as personagens transitam, Santa Fé acompanha as transformações de seus moradores e de suas práticas sociais, sofrendo a ação do tempo e das gerações que se sucedem. Este estudo analisa o processo de modernização de Santa Fé encabeçado por Rodrigo Terra Cambará, procurando estabelecer uma relação entre a personagem e algumas teorias sobre a modernidade. Para Giddens (2002), o que caracteriza a modernidade e a separa de períodos precedentes é o extremo dinamismo, não apenas no ritmo da mudança social, mas na amplitude e profundidade em que ela afeta as práticas sociais e modos de comportamento. O Dr. Rodrigo incorporou novos hábitos e comportamentos à vida social de Santa Fé, foi um entusiasta da modernidade sem perceber que ele próprio sofria suas consequências. Suas influências não ficaram restritas aos aspectos materiais ou arquitetônicos da cidade, mas fizeram-se sentir, principalmente, no modo de vida das demais personagens, transformando sua visão do mundo.
