Abstract: Objective: to understand the mental health demands of adolescents from their perspective and from the perspective of professionals in primary health care. Method: Qualitative research developed with 12 adolescents and 24 health professionals in the Southern Brazil. Results: Primary health care is the appropriate service to strengthen bonds with adolescents in mental distress and generate changes in the direction of their lives. Strategies such as welcoming emotional complaints, qualified listening, empathy and promoting the autonomy of adolescents, aligned with the special mental health care network, manage to work on a plurality of situations that prevent mental suffering. Conclusion: the need to implement public policies aimed exclusively at adolescents and that are designed to meet all of their specificities was perceived. Furthermore, they should serve as support for professionals so that, together with society, they can modify the realities experienced by Brazilian adolescents, minimizing access barriers, equalizing rights, reducing epidemiological data and building a prosperous future for adolescents.
