Abstract

Este artigo analisa os problemas atuais da União Européia – em particular a evidente crise de confiança - com foco principal na
moeda única. O artigo sustenta que tais problemas têm as suas origens na falta de criação de uma união política para acompanhar a união monetária criada no Tratado de Maastricht. Para recuperar a moeda única e, assim, a confiança da organização, é necessária a criação de uma união econômica. Em outras palavras, a transferência de controle sobre muitos aspectos das economias dos estados membros para o nível europeu. Levando em consideração as dificuldades em se criar qualquer tipo de união política desde o fim da Guerra Fria, faz-se necessário a aceleração de um processo de integração variável entre os estados membros.
