Abstract

There are several benefits coming from the planned urban forestry, which is extremely important not only for the ambience of the city, but also for a better quality of life of its citizens. The present study aimed to analyze in a qualitative and quantitative way the afforestation and verify the conflicting relationship between individual trees and carrying capacity of the roads in downtown area of the city of Ponta Grossa-PR. In a total of 37.64 kilometers, in 38 streets, there was obtained information relating to the identification, characteristics and environment of the species. 1.238 trees were found, which 76,17% are exotic species and 19,06% are native species, in a total of 48 different species distributed into 27 families. Regarding pruning, the most performed was the light one (43,7%), the width of the sidewalks, the majority (25 of them) supports medium trees. Concerning the conflicts, lack of space (46.6%) was the most observed. Generally, the results show that the lack of an Urban Forestry Plan for the city can be measured by the absence of organization, management and maintenance of the individual road trees which were analyzed.
