Abstract

This study describes the profile and quantity of deaths that occurred in municipalities in the state of Paraná, making a comparison between the years 2019 and 2020, with the intention of estimating the excess of deaths possibly attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were obtained from the Ministry of Health and Reports of the Paraná State Health Secretariat. 10 cities from different regions of the state were selected. For each municipality, an estimate was made of the population and the number of deaths expected for the year 2020, from the historical average between 2015 and 2019. To estimate the excess of deaths, the number of deaths that occurred in the year 2020 was subtracted from the number of deaths expected for the period. The state recorded 6093 more deaths in 2020 than in 2019. There was an increase in deaths, mainly among the elderly, and greater excesses of deaths among men. In the set of analyzed municipalities, 1900 excess deaths were recorded in 2020. The most populous municipalities recorded more cases of the disease and excess deaths in 2020. The findings show the occurrence of a significant excess of deaths in Paraná, and an unequal impact in the analyzed municipalities.
