Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of political Catholicism inBrazil between 1890 and 1934. At first, how this Catholicism has taken an eminently nationalistform, producing a language that would be developed by a set of clerical and lay’s actionsaiming at the emergence of the Catholic Church (CC) as a strong political force will bediscussed. Then, we move on to how this political Catholicism, undoubtedly influenced bythe nationalist discourse - but going beyond it - becomes a militant one as well as conquestoriented,to the point of taking the lead of the political and constitutional decisions whichtook place during the aforementioned period of time.
