Abstract

Philip Pettit is undoubtedly an important name in the so called republicanrevival, that is, the revival of the tradition of republican thought as a source for a discussionof contemporary issues. Despite the author’s own claim that his theory is a republican theory, its focus on freedom as nondomination and little emphasis on civic virtue, makes hisrepublicanism subject of reservations by his readers. Some of his critics approach hisrepublicanism to liberalism in particular the egalitarian liberalism of John Rawls. This paperaims to resume some critics often made to Pettit’s theory, to explore possible relationshipswith the thought of Rawls and finally argues that these critics do not undermine decisivelythe thought of Pettit.
