Abstract

This paper aims to show how the nourishment of female prisoners happens inMadre Pelletier Women’s Penitentiary, located in Porto Alegre. Assuming that the tastevaries according to social class in which the person has been created or live, this paper triesto find out if the right to material assistance, in other words, the nourishment of femaleprisoners is being respected by the state. Then, from a field research, and with observationsand interviews conducted in May 2012 with the responsible nutritionist, prisoners working inthe kitchen, prison officials and the judge who oversees law House, it was observed thequality and quantity of food, besides the hygiene of the place where the food is prepared andthe way it is served. It is noticed that the female prisoners do not report complaints about thefood, not even about the quality or quantity. They also do not complain about the hygiene ofthe kitchen, or the preparation of the dishes. This situation, differentiated in relation to apaternal prison system is also recognized by the judge. Thus, it can be affirmed that the foodsystem, in this House, respects the human rights of people deprived of their liberty.
