The discursive genres, as proposed by Bakhtin (2003), were recognized by the Curriculum Guidelines of Paraná (Paraná, 2008) as a tool for teaching of the Portuguese language. Assuming this guidance, this article has the objective to present a reading and writing experience with the genre reader's letter in the classroom, prepared in view of developing the linguistic-discursive ability to 8th graders of elementary school of a school public of Toledo City - PR. The didactic referrals were based on the proposal of Teaching Sequence, according Dolz, Noverraz and Schneuwly (2004), following the adjustments made by Costa Hübes (2008), which makes an analysis of gender and its constituent elements – content theme, style and compositional construction – according to the guidelines of Bakhtin / Voloshinov (2004) and Bakhtin (2003). It is thus a study guided the writings of Bakhtin Circle, consequently, in the socio-historical conception and dialogic language. The didactic procedures proved that the work on gender in the classroom, within the theoretical perspective adopted, contributes to the understanding of reading and writing in the teaching and learning process of language as an effective means of verbal interaction.
