Keywords:
Backland, cowboy, Guimarães Rosa, “O Recado do Morro”, “Pé-duro, Chapéu de couro”Abstract
This essay aims, firstly, to comment on the similarities and distances between Guimarães Rosa, Euclides da Cunha and José de Alencar with regard to the representation of the “vaqueiro” figure in their literary works and, secondly, to show how Pedro Orósio, the protagonist of the short-story “O Recado do Morro”, embodies the reflections that Guimarães Rosa made on the nature of the “sertanejo-vaqueiro”, which are inscribed in the journalistic text “Pé-duro, Chapéu de couro”..
