This study aims to analyze how linguistics variation has been dealt with in two textbooks of Portuguese language in 7th grade, elementary school – ‘Coleção Apoema’ and ‘Tecendo Linguagens’. The research is at the interface of Sociolinguistics and Portuguese as a native language, which is discussed under the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC). Therefore, we use a qualitative approach and bibliographical descriptive methodology. The results show that ‘variation’ as a linguistics phenomenon had been underexplored in textbooks that, although they advocate an approach based on the development of competences and abilities, do not contemplate them effectively. The fact that linguistics variation is placed on the fringes of other study objects, at the school context, limits discussions and reflections on issues related to cultural diversity and goes against the current need to combat linguistics prejudice. Thus, we call the attention of editorial market in presenting didactic proposals to integrate different language practices and intercultural and aesthetic experiences.
