Abstract

This article intends to show how the narrator of Journal of a Voyage to Brazil, and Residence There, During Part of the Years 1821, 1822, 1823, written by the English author Maria Graham, is related to what Walter Benjamin points out as the genuine narrator in his text called The narrator. Journal of a Voyage to Brazil, and Residence There, During Part of the Years 1821, 1822, 1823 gives us an account of two trips to Brazil taken by Maria Graham between the years of 1821 and 1823, exactly when this country was becoming an independent nation. In order to show how Graham can be considered this genuine narrator, first I will write about how Benjamin portrays the narrator and his characteristics, and next I will analyze some specific passages of Graham’s diary, which would explain why she can be considered this genuine narrator Benjamin talks about.
