FREAK SHOWS - CONTEMPORARY EVENTS CARRIED OUT BY ADEPTS OF BODY MODIFICATION

O primeiro museu público de Londres (1723) exibia como parte de seu acervo, portadores de anomalias físicas e indivíduos aptos a realizar "extraordinárias" práticas corporais. Chamados: monstros, aberrações, freaks, anormais, estes indivíduos constituíam um rentável negócio, ligado à área do entretenimento. O formato itinerante adotado para a apresentação destas atrações, denominado freak show, surge no século seguinte, nos Estados Unidos, decorrente do incêndio que destruiu o American Museum, cujas principais atrações eram similares as listadas acima.Mais de dois séculos depois da inauguração do museu londrino, quando corpos humanos, mortos, fatiados e despelados - após serem submetidos à técnica de plastinação desenvolvida pelo anatomista Gunther von Hagens - compõem a exposição artística que no Brasil intitulou-se: "Corpos Espetaculares", os freak shows ressurgem com nova roupagem. Em seu novo formato, são protagonizados por adeptos da body modification - conceito que designa modificações corporais, executadas de diferentes formas - e compostos por performances baseadas em técnicas de manipulação corporal, em sua maioria, originárias de sociedades ágrafas. O presente trabalho relata imageticamente um destes eventos.
