Abstract

This work aims to show how Baz Luhrman's movie utilizes Galen's "theory of the humors"

and the four elements of Greek tradition (water, fire, earth and air). Although these

elements are not explicit in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the "theory of the humors"

was largely known in Elizabethan England, as can be exemplified with Ben Johnson's

Every Man is His Humor, or the parodic use Shakespeare makes of it in Henry V.
