This work discusses the teaching and the learning processes by the textual
genre theoretical perspective in the National Curriculum Parameters of Portuguese
Language for the elementary school (BRASIL, 1999). For this, a speculative recover is
presented to establish a debate regarding textual genres and their implications to languages
teaching and learning, pointing out the importance of studies of this object. In addition, a
parallel is realized between the document and the theoretical dimension discussed before,
analyzing the considerations that the PCN’s done about these processes. As a final point,
the importance of this approach is mentioned, suggesting a work with genres in the
classroom, according to the pedagogic model elaborated by Martin (1999), with the
purpose of stimulating and developing the critical participation of students in front of
language and society.
