FROM VICTOR HUGO TO WALT DISNEY: THE DIALOGISM IN “THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME

Abstract

The trip to a medieval Paris, the scenery of a tragic love story between a gypsy and a ringer
with physical deformities, created by Victor Hugo in his book Notre-Dame of Paris, popularly known as The
Hunchback of Notre-Dame. From the novel of this French writer, Disney industries have produced one of the
most known cinematography adaptations, inside the animation films universe. The proposal of this lecture
is to establish an analysis from the adaptation of Walt Disney, from 1966, from images and songs that are
in the movie. It will be noticed that the visual art which is in Quasímodo and Esmeralda’s plot as well as
the discourse of the songs used by the characters during it, lead the viewer to reflect about tolerance and
respect concerning the differences: physical ( related to Quasímodo) or religious (related to Esmeralda).
Among the relationships that generate the intrigue, we could highlight the relations among The
Hunchback, the gypsy and Dom Claude Frollo, the antagonist in the novel – from one side, the discourse
of the acceptance of the other, the solidarity wish among men and the hope of a fair society; from the
other side, the intolerance, the prejudice and the disregard to the less privileged ones.
